Sign the maternal & child health pledge

Send a message to our political leaders urging government action to make every mother and child count so that we no longer live in a world where:

  • One in every twelve children in Cambodia dies before their fifth birthday.
  • One hundred times more women lose their lives during child birth in Timor Leste than in Australia.*

If Australia does its fair share we have the potential to save, on average, the lives of 75,000 children and 15,000 women each year.**

Health Petition

Pledge of support

Reducing child mortality and improving maternal health are two of the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). In Southeast Asia and the Pacific, 16 of the 22 developing countries in the region are NOT on track to achieve Goal 4, a two-thirds reduction in child mortality. Seven countries are NOT on track to achieve Goal 5, reduce maternal mortality by three-quarters.

I support:

  1. Increasing aid for basic and reproductive health in Australia's aid program by $400 million, to $1000 million by 2010-11.
  2. Improving coordination of international assistance to the region.
  3. Resolving major impediments to better health in the region.

Personal message suggestions

This year 10 million children will die from preventable and curable diseases and over 500,000 women will die during pregnancy and childbirth. Australia can and should do more to prevent these unnecessary deaths.

I believe the Australian Government should do everything it can to prevent one in seven Cambodian children dying before they turn five.

Health means life - I support more and better aid to improve access to health services in our region.

No women should have to give birth without a skilled health professional.
